Short Blog 1 — Sara in Scarborough!
Social justice in my city, Scarborough, is something I have sought after since I was young. Whether that would be through volunteering, participating in city-wide events, or organizing fundraisers, I always strive to engage in my community. I want to create a better space and impression in such an overlooked city, as it is an important aspect of my identity.
I am a student at the University of Toronto in the program Physical & Mathematical Sciences. I hope to major in actuarial sciences and minor in statistics and cinema studies. I love to paint and draw, although I am not very good, and of course, help better my community in any way I can. I am Sara Zawahid, here to show you the beauty and potential of Scarborough!
Social Justice in any city is an important aspect to look into as it gives you a better idea of the place in which you reside in. By acknowledging the negatives and positives of the city I can explore and learn how and why things are the way they are in specifics regions. Looking into the fairness of healthcare, employment, housing, racial discrimination, poverty, economic injustice, and many other aspects all fall under the umbrella of social justice.
Unfortunately, Scarborough's reputation is not always seen in a positive light. One of the major problems that I would like to look into is the housing in Scarborough. Many residents of this city live in poorly maintained government-subsidized housing, and with that comes many problems like infestations, poor ventilation, or both damaged and broken interiors and exteriors. These issues create a negative effect on the health and safety of these residents as these poorly maintained homes directly affect marginalized people in this area.
However, I’d like to show you how amazing Scarborough can be, as it is what I like to call a bit of a fixer-upper. There is so much beauty and culture both hidden and apparent in Scarborough if you’re just willing to look. One of my personal favourite places in Scarborough is the Guild Park, which is a beautiful space residing in Guildwood, an area in Scarborough. Most of my highschool memories were made in this very park! The Guild park is an amazing place to relax, go for a stroll, or even take photos. It is also connected to the Scarborough Bluffs if you want to go on a short hike to see the view of Lake Ontario from above!
I hope you’re excited to learn more about Scarborough !!
